September 26 Update
Dear Members,
With all the hurricane-related activity these
past weeks I am sure everyone is very busy. Our thoughts and best wishes are
with those who have been directly affected by these tragedies.
The October meeting is cancelled and we will be
going to bimonthly meetings starting in November, although we are discussing a
Christmas party in December--please weigh in with your thoughts on that.
Several members have sent me emails with
suggestions to improve the Section and offers of assistance. I will respond to
each in detail in the coming week and I appreciate your efforts and suggestions.
Please keep the ideas rolling. A golf tournament was mentioned and if it's
something the membership would be interested in then we can discuss a Spring
tourney at the November meeting. Special thanks to Brian Gibbs of ABS
Consulting for his exhaustive list of suggestions, comments and offers of
assistance. We'll be addressing each of his points in the near future.
Jim Britton of Deepwater Corrosion Services
gave a great presentation at this month's meeting and anyone interested in
getting a copy of the photos and presentation can contact him directly at
Deepwater. Many thanks to him for the educational and entertaining show!
Please contact me at 713 302 4986 if you have
any questions, comments or suggestions. I look forward to seeing everyone in
November.

05 Update
Dear Members,
As this is my first message in the 2005-2006 Session as
your Section Chair, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for
visiting the website and for supporting your local Section.
We’ve all heard it a thousand times but it really is true that the
members make the Section. Serving on
the Board is a great way to bring this reality home, along with a realization of
how important active membership is to the long-term health and success of the
Section. I encourage any of you with
an interest in directing, advising, supporting, or just plain curious about the
operations to volunteer to serve on committees or run for a seat on the Board.
It’s one way to give back to our professional community and it can be
really exciting (particularly when the sparks fly).
If you visit the Section Board page you’ll find contact
information for the current Board. Feel
free to contact any of us with comments or suggestions.
If you have a topic you’d like to see discussed at a
meeting or if you can recommend a speaker please do so.
I look forward to serving your Section in the coming year.
Please let me know how I may be of service.

Your Chairman,
Shane Prudhomme

Subject: 2004/5 Session, March 05 Update
Hello Everyone,
Hope all is well and everyone is keeping reasonably busy. The first quarter
2005 for the NACE Houston Section started well with a very well attended January
joint meeting with ASM. February was relatively quiet, but hopefully the
remaining meetings will pick up again. The March meeting next week should be
interesting with a very accomplished speaker, Stephen Smith of ExxonMobil,
talking on CO2/H2S Corrosion (aka- sweet and sour corrosion) it should be good
so do try make it, and pre-register if you can, that way we can keep a tab on
the number of dinner plates required etc.
Social wise the annual BBQ is confirmed, and the Board and Committee look
forward to driving the event to a memorable level, see web page and attached
flyer (Saturday April 30th ). We opted to have a low token entry fee, and that
will cover your whole family and/or guests. The event, weather permitting should
be good, with great food, music, activities for the kids and adults, so please
mark your diary, and make sure yall come on over. There is no grand theme but it
will no doubt gravitate to a Texas style event, and we will not discourage that.
On other matters we are hoping to have a round table type panel meeting under
the auspices of the Houston Mayors office (courtesy Amber Pappas-NACE
Foundation) with the involvement of the City chief engineers team, and will keep
you posted on that one. The remaining panel talks and subject matters look good,
but as always any further ideas are welcome.
Anyway, do stay in touch with the web page regularly to stay abreast of
developments and announcements and feel free to contact myself, or any member of
the Board or Committee regarding any matters of concern.
Sincerely
Binder Singh PhD PE

Subject: 2004/5 New Board
Hello
Everyone,
As
most of you may know, the upcoming 2004/5 NACE Houston Section Board was
recently
elected, and shortly thereafter, the incoming team with advisers convened to
discuss the way
forward. Firstly on behalf of the new board we would like to thank the
membership for voting;
secondly, much gratitude to the outgoing board and committee for the past
years’ hard work.
One of the biggest changes implemented over recent years has been the concept of
holding
a panel meeting every session, the success of that approach has encouraged us to
continue
with that format - though there may be exceptions. The new board offers a blend
of experience
and revitalized enthusiasm, and is comprised of the following:
Chair-
Binder Singh, Deepwater Corrosion Services Inc,
Houston
,
TX
Vice Chair- Dylan Pugh,
ExxonMobil,
Houston
,
TX
Treasurer- Shane
Prudomme, Hempel Coatings Inc,
Conroe
,
TX
Secretary- Ramesh Singh,
Nadoi Engineering,
Houston
,
TX
As
usual we anticipate being supported by invaluable assistance from the previous
Board in particular:
Trustee- Jane Brown, Brown Corrosion Services Inc,
Houston
TX
Adviser- Saadedine
Tebbal SET labs Inc,
Stafford
,
TX
Arrangements- Brent
Bertrand, Brance-Krachy Co., Inc.,
Houston
TX
Presently
we anticipate creating a number of sub-posts for Program Chairs. That listing
will be
advised shortly, with some familiar as well as new faces. In the meantime, we
look forward to
serving the needs of this section, and invite constructive comments to
facilitate progress. We
will endeavor to contact most members directly either through email or phone
over the coming
weeks for individual feedback. Our hope is to create renewed momentum, encourage
new ideas,
and aspirations, and achieve improved attendances.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.
We aim to make the technical sessions highly relevant, informative and user
friendly for all, and
designed to cover a wide range of topics: such as Materials Selection,
CP/Retrofits, Coatings,
Inhibition, Flow, Microbial, Cracking Phenomena, Weld Corrosion, CO2/H2S
Corrosion, Integrity
Management, Risk Based Studies, Modeling, etc. We also plan to
proceed with existing joint
meeting arrangements with ASM/Coatings Societies, as well as perhaps select
lunchtime
meeting(s) to accommodate new areas. And of course being
Texas
, we are looking to include
a ‘black tie and boots ?’ BBQ event possibly early 2005- more details to
follow on that one.
With regards to the Monthly Meetings, the
kick-off for this season is slated for Tuesday August 10th
.
The topic will be that age old favorite, Mixed Materials aka Galvanic Corrosion.
This is a recurring
problem area and we have lined up a panel of experienced practitioners, namely
Dan Efird,
Brian Gibbs, and Bill Tillis to cover the subject with case histories from
industry. It promises to
be a lively affair with an excellent chance for technical update, so please mark
your diary. For the
September meeting we have penciled in an Offshore CP Retrofit Panel – looking
at practical
life extension for structures, and in that case panelists will again focus on
real applications,
Jim Britton has agreed to drive that one, more details to follow in due course.
Thereafter the
Program Chairs will select optimum sessions for their panels etc.
Remember its your society and your section, so lets make it work as both a
social event as
well as a source of knowledge and business update. We look forward to meeting up
with old
and new members for the forthcoming sessions.
Sincerely
Binder Singh
